Cohortly FAQ

Real Connection, Without The Awkwardness

Everything you need to know about how Cohortly helps people build friendships through small, consistent, low-pressure social groups.

What is Cohortly Social?
Cohortly is a better way to meet new people. Instead of awkward events or one-on-one meetups, you're matched into a small group of 6–8 people based on your vibe, interests, and availability. Then you just show up. No swiping, no pressure, no wandering around trying to start conversations.
How is this different from apps or events?
Most options today fall into two buckets.
  • Apps: endless chatting, low follow-through.
  • Events: overwhelming, awkward, hit-or-miss.
  • Cohortly is a 4-week experience, not a one-off meetup.
  • You meet with the same group weekly, which helps real familiarity form.
  • We ask participants to commit to showing up because consistency is what makes this work.
Why multiple sessions?
Because real friendships rarely form in one meeting. Research suggests it takes repeated interactions over time to build meaningful social connection.
  • Roughly 50 hours to move from acquaintance to friend.
  • Often 200+ hours for close friendships.
  • Even smaller studies show people need many repeated interactions before they feel genuinely connected.
What if I can't make one of the sessions?
We understand things come up. That said, the experience works best when everyone participates consistently. Missing a session can shift group dynamic, and we want everyone to have the best shot at real connection.
How does matching work?
  • Availability, so people can actually meet.
  • Vibe, like low-key vs social energy.
  • Shared interests.
  • Basic compatibility factors.
  • Our goal is simple: create groups that work in real life, not just on paper.
What happens after I sign up?
  1. You answer a short onboarding quiz.
  2. We place you into a small group, usually within 1–2 weeks.
  3. You get your weekly meetup time and first meetup date/location.
  4. You confirm your spot in the cohort.
  5. You show up each week.
What is the actual experience like?
  • 6–8 people.
  • Casual setting (happy hour, walk, coffee, etc.).
  • Light structure to get things started.
  • Then natural conversation.
  • This follows a growing trend toward low-pressure socializing, where shared activities make connection feel easier and more natural.
What if it's awkward?
It might be for the first few minutes, and that's normal. Everyone is there for the same reason. We design each meetup to reduce pressure, make conversation starts easier, and avoid stand-around moments.
What if people don't show up?
We take reliability seriously.
  • Commitment signals like confirmations and deposits.
  • Careful group construction.
  • Reliability-focused operations and iteration.
  • The experience only works if people actually show up, so this is core to our design.
Why small groups?
  • Large groups can feel overwhelming.
  • One-on-one can feel high pressure.
  • Small groups feel safer, flow more naturally, and make it easier for everyone to participate.
Is this for dating or friends?
Primarily for meeting new people and building friendships. Naturally, real human connections can go in any direction, but friendship and social belonging are the primary focus.
Do I need to be outgoing?
Not at all. Cohortly is built specifically for people who don't love networking vibes, don't want to work a room, and prefer more natural connection.
Why does this matter?
  • Making friends as an adult is harder than it should be.
  • Many people struggle to form new friendships.
  • Loneliness is rising.
  • Even small social interactions can improve mood and wellbeing.
  • Strong friendships are linked to lower stress, better mental health, and longer life expectancy.
Is this safe?
  • Thoughtful group matching.
  • Controlled group sizes.
  • Clear participation expectations.
  • Future verification layers as the product evolves.
How much does it cost?
  • Usually free to join.
  • In some cases, a small refundable deposit to hold your spot.
  • The goal is not to charge people. It's to improve attendance reliability.
Who is this for?
  • People who want to meet new people.
  • People feeling stuck in their social routine.
  • People who just moved to a new city.
  • People who want something more real than apps.
What if I don't click with the group?
That's okay. Not every group will be perfect. You'll still meet new people, still have a social experience, and we use that feedback to improve future matching.
